History of The Rock…

The original “Rock” opened in September 1974 in the back room of The Rockingham Arms pub in the quaint little village of Wentworth to the West of Rotherham. The first guest artist was Roy Bailey. “The Rock” was a live music club that took it’s title from this first venue in Wentworth where people could join as members. Now nationally acknowledged, this venture was conceived, founded and organised by Rob Shaw, a local music fan who was at the helm, with long term support from Lynn Morawski on the door and Adam on the music for 38 years!

Over time The Rock became established and acknowledged by the public and the artists alike as one of the best acoustic music clubs in the North of England. This resulted in us winning Best Folk Club in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, 2004. Famous artists too numerous to mention have graced The Rock stage over the years and our mission is to keep the music alive in our latest and only second venue here in Maltby.

We also should recognise and thank Rob Shaw with all the people who have helped him over the years in bringing first class live music to The Rock in South Yorkshire. We aim to continue that legacy and this great music.
